Our strategic business objective to be the industry leader is backed up by our sustainability strategy. To support this strategy, in 2005 we set ourselves objectives to reach by the end of 2010. Each year we measure our progress against them and decide targets for the following year that will take us closer.
The Group objectives and targets are broken down so that our individual businesses know what is expected of them from year to year. In 2009, good progress was made in areas and in many cases some businesses are further ahead than others, for example waste capturing and biodiversity assessments. MENA has set challenging 2010 targets in line with UK requirements and a programme is in place to ensure our Canada and Caribbean operations are able to report in line with these requirements.
On the following page we have set out our Group targets for 2009 and detailed our progress against them. We are currently developing our sustainability reporting processes in Carillion MENA and our Canada and Caribbean operations: the targets and performance exclude these operations except where we state otherwise.
