We are pleased to present our report on sustainability at Carillion during 2006. The report describes the progress we have made on sustainability issues over the past year, and our plans and targets for 2007.
Sustainability is a core element of the Group’s business strategy, delivering benefits for our customers, our people, our shareholders and the wider community. In 2006, we continued to use our well-established strategy model for sustainable development, which demonstrates and quantifies how improving our impact on the environment and on society supports the achievement of our business objectives.
The Group’s commitment to sustainability is headed by our Sustainability Committee. The committee is chaired by our chief executive, John McDonough, and includes Group Heads of Function and Business Group Managing Directors to ensure that it maintains close links with the Group’s operational activities. The committee also includes two external advisors, Jonathon Porritt, Chairman of the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Commission and Julia Cleverdon, Chief Executive of Business in the Community (BITC), who joined the committee at the end of 2006.
In 2006, I was appointed as Director of Group Sustainability to lead and develop the implementation of the Group’s sustainability programme, in addition to my role as Managing Director of Carillion Health.
There were three main focus areas during 2006:
| - | Introducing a Sustainability Excellence Model to support the delivery of our policies and objectives |
| - | Measuring our carbon footprint and developing a strategy to control and reduce carbon emissions |
| - | Maintaining our sector position in the Business in the Community’s Corporate Responsibility Index |
