Legal services are not the first area of business, which come to mind when you think about the positive impact technology, and innovation is having on day-to-day operations. That however, is not the real picture. This is a sector where technology is increasingly being used and delivering major benefits.
Carillion Advice Service (CAS) is a Managed Legal Services operation, which provides paralegal and commodity legal services using the very latest technology. We already use a range of technology within CAS. However, in recent months we have been exploring a wide range of new technology that uses machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotic process automation.
This has led to us signing a deal with Luminance, a leading provider of artificial intelligence technology for the legal market. Luminance, developed from Ph.D. research at Cambridge University, harnesses proprietary machine learning algorithms to read and understand legal documents as a human does, at speeds no human can match. It detects patterns within language using a unique combination of supervised and unsupervised machine learning, allowing it to sort, cluster and classify documents while exposing anomalies – subtle differences between similar documents that indicate where review should be focused.
We are the first alternative provider of legal services to work with Luminance. We will use Luminance to enhance the corporate due diligence document review projects we conduct on behalf of M&A departments in the UK’s leading law firms and our corporate clients. The system’s ability to prioritise a data room review by automatically highlighting key areas of interest allows us to use our legal resources as wisely and cost-effectively as possible, delivering better value and higher-quality results to our clients. Built-in collaboration tools also add value to CAS’s work by streamlining the entire review process.
This sort of high quality, cost-effective outsourcing of commoditised legal processes saves businesses money and frees qualified in-house lawyers from low-value repetitive work. Luminance’s new-era product offers our clients exactly the kind of innovation they need to allow them to focus on adding real value to the business.
Innovation and technology are key to CAS’s continued success. As a multi awarding winning innovator in the managed legal services market we will continue to find new ways to add value. This partnership is a fantastic step in the right direction and opens up a whole new world to CAS and Carillion.
