Val Asprey is Carillion’s Regional Operations Manager (North) for the US Visiting Forces contract. She is based at RAF Menwith Hill and her responsibilities cover the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System at Fylingdales on the North York Moors.
Carillion has been working here since 2007 and so has Val.
She manages a team of 12 working on the facilities services contract. A further team of five covers small new works – anything up to £500,000. She deals with up to 150 sub-contractors, and has to be responsible for them all on this ultra-high security site.
Val liaises with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, civil engineering teams and the end user – the US Visiting Forces.
“The client understands we are all working together and if we fail, they fail. I have an amazing team behind me and if I’m successful it’s because of them.”
The Carillion Values come through all the time. “It’s absolutely ‘we achieve together’,” she says.
Val has total responsibility for Health & Safety on site.
“Our client is fully on board with our initiatives and has adopted our ‘Don’t Walk By’ safety approach. We have now had over four years without an LTI and have recently been the proud recipient of the IMS Directors’ Gold Certificate. It speaks of the nature of the businesses – the behaving safely culture is well-embedded.”
The Carillion and client teams get together for some time out, with food and music at Christmas and barbecues in the summer. They have also jointly fundraised for the Carillion charity, Barnardo’s.
“Working up here on the North York Moors, it’s often wild, occasionally crazy and always beautiful. It’s an amazing job, at times stressful, and frequently challenging – no two days are the same.”
