The challenge

The Great Western Hospital (GWH) Swindon (formerly the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust) is one of Carillion’s earliest PFI contracts.

In 1999, the Trust entered into a 30 year PFI Agreement with The Hospital Company (THC) to finance, design, construct and provide Facilities Management (FM) services for a new healthcare facility on 32 acres in Swindon, Wiltshire befitting the needs of patient care for the new century.

Altogether, the Great Western Hospital (GWH) is a 660 bed acute hospital consisting of three hospitals and services. GWH itself is a modern district general hospital that provides emergency care, surgery, diagnostics, outpatient and day case services. The Brunel Treatment Centre provides high quality elective care and diagnostics. The Shalbourne Suite is a private patient unit within the Brunel Treatment Centre.

The solutions we created

The GWH includes 627 beds, 15 theatres, 22 wards and 12 Outpatient clinics. We directly deliver the following FM services to the trust: patient & retail catering, cleaning, portering, mailroom, security, waste & recycling. We deliver M&E and fabric maintenance including minor road repairs and landscaping. We provide helpdesk and switchboard services. We are the managing contractor for pest control, window cleaning and vending.

Carillion is responsible for the delivery of a wide variety of major and small project works with a total value of approx. £1.5m per annum. We provide a mix of capabilities to meet the needs of specific projects from within the Great Western Hospital contract delivery team. We also draw on additional expertise and capabilities within Carillion including: project management, design (including M & E design), CDM co-ordination, quantity surveying, building surveying, property legislation and Building Regulations, sustainability and BREEAM.

Outcomes, benefits & social value

This large project has become a major centre of activity and an integral part of the local community in Swindon.

  • Carillion contributes to providing a safe and secure environment for 600,000 patients and visitors per annum. The hospital performs significantly better than targets set for minimising rates of infection in hospitals.
  • We manage 5,000 helpdesk calls a month
  • We handle 70,000 switchboard calls per month
